Best artistic advice ever? “Compare yourself [ your work ] to the best out there.”

I used to show my work to my father [ also an artist ] and say,”I’m better than this guy! I should be getting work at _______” And my father would say, “Who’s the best guy out there? Who’s work do you admire? Look at his work and start figuring out what separates his or her work from yours. Why do his/her faces look better? What pieces are you missing? If you compare yourself to average artists [ in any field ] you’ll never get better. Why would you? Where is your motivation? Always critique/compare your work with the best in your profession. Then you’ll know where you stand and what to improve.”
